The biggest benefit of valerian root – and the one with the most evidence behind it – is the ability to fall asleep faster and sleep better through the night. The current research is mixed, but studies indicate that valerian root can increase the quality of sleep both on its own or when taken in combination with other supplements.
A double-blind study conducted by the Foellinge Health Centre in Sweden found that the effects of Valerian on poor sleep were significant. 44 percent of the participants reported perfect sleep, whilst 89 percent reported improved sleep – none of this group reported any side effects either, including morning drowsiness.
